Wendelstein cable car
A visit to the 1,838 metre-high Wendelstein is quite literally one of the highlights along the German Alpine Road. The popular panoramic peak is accessible from two sides. The spectacular cog railway has been transporting mountain and hiking enthusiasts from Brannenburg/Inntal to the high alpine terrain since 1912. Even in the early days of electrical engineering, the railway was designed in such a way that the braking energy of the train travelling downhill could be used to power the train travelling uphill at the same time. A hydroelectric power station with two turbines was also built at the foot of the mountain to generate the direct current required by the railway for the ascent. Alternatively, you can take the cable car from Bayrischzell to the Wendelstein in just 6 minutes. Close to the mountain station, there is plenty to discover and experience, from the panoramic trail with its stunning views to Germany's highest show cave.
Operating times: June to September 9 am to 5 pm, October to May until 4 pm.
