Old Salt Works Bad Reichenhall
It is probably the most beautiful salt works in the world. In any case, this industrial monument is the only royal one, as none other than King Ludwig I of Bavaria had it built after the fire in 1834. A guided tour begins in the machine hall with its gigantic water wheels turning incessantly inside the building and descends into the fascinating world underground.
Impressive tunnel systems lead deep into the mountain. Passing drive rods and deflection levers, you reach popular highlights such as the salt grotto (historic brine grotto), the Karl Theodor pump (the beating heart of Bad Reichenhall) and the relief of Elector Karl Theodor. Above the main well shaft, the route leads up to the salt museum.
