Historic Marktstrasse Bad Tölz
The "most beautiful banqueting hall in the Oberland", as Marktstraße is praised by connoisseurs, owes its current appearance above all to the Munich architect and local historian Gabriel von Seidl. Between 1900 and 1910, Marktstraße was freed from some of its neo-Gothic influences and adapted to the Alpine style with new gable fronts. The façades of the large gabled houses from the 18th century, which are modelled on Upper Bavarian farmhouses, were often decorated with Lüftlmalerei paintings. An outstanding example is the former town hall (now the town museum). The creation of a pedestrian zone with new natural stone paving based on the old model has added to the beauty of this square-like street.
A stroll through Marktstraße with its small, winding alleyways offers everything your heart desires: from everyday goods and traditional clothing to speciality delicacies and souvenirs. Enjoy Bavarian pub culture in one of the many places to stop for a bite to eat. And the Marktstraße is always the right place for a summery iced coffee under a parasol.
Our special tip: a visit to the Tölz City Museum. With its façade, it not only provides the film set for several series productions such as Der Bulle von Tölz, but also uses modern media and interactive tools to invite you on a journey through time. You can experience the development of the middle classes, art and cultural history of the entire Isarwinkel region, customs, trade and crafts from an unusual perspective - experience the history of Bad Tölz.
