Chiemsee boat trip
Throughout the year, the Chiemsee boat service travels to the Herreninsel and Fraueninsel islands and takes visitors to the numerous sights, especially the Ludwig II Royal Palace. The boats depart approximately every 20 minutes in summer. It is about a 15-minute walk from the landing stage on Herreninsel to the royal palace. The castle attracts visitors like a magnet. If you can free yourself from the pull, you will find royal tranquillity and majestic views of the lake and the panorama of the Chiemgau Alps on the island. The "Old Castle", the Chapel of the Cross and the Augustinian collegiate church are reminders of the time when Augustinian monks ran their monastery on Herreninsel. Nearby is the estate with its state stud farm. The horses in the paddocks also characterise the courtly atmosphere on the island. Over 8 kilometres of well-maintained hiking trails await visitors to the island. The paths repeatedly lead past marvellous viewpoints. The intersection of the paths in the centre of the island is the palace garden of the royal palace with its magnificent fountains and water features. After a short tour of the park, a look inside the replica of Versailles is a must. Guided tours take place on an ongoing basis and provide an insight into around 20 magnificent and splendid rooms that were completed before the death of Ludwig II. After the tour, there is the option of returning to the landing stages by horse-drawn carriage.
From there, the tour continues to the Fraueninsel. Its character is completely different from that of Herreninsel. It is much smaller, densely populated and manageable, an idyllic and romantic gem. The monastery forms the centre of the island. In addition to the gatehouse, which is the oldest secular building in Germany, the cemetery is also worth seeing. A special place, full of dignity and tranquillity, with beautiful wrought-iron crosses. A tour of the cemetery is like a journey through history, as the inscriptions on the graves bear the names of many famous artists, politicians and generals. The worldly pleasures bring the visitor back to the here and now. Numerous inns and cafés invite you to stop for refreshments and the island fishermen offer freshly smoked Chiemsee roe and other delicacies in their gardens.
